You might just recognize this game, even if the theme and graphics are new to you. IGT has taken their popular freefall symbols concept, and given it a brand new coat of paint. What happens is that when you hit a winning combination, the symbols explode – allowing new symbols to fall from above. This can create new wins, which in turn can lead to more explosions and hopefully even more wins. The same idea can be seen in action on several slots including Masques of San Marco and the Da Vinci Diamonds slot.
Pixies of the Forest has very nice graphics, with different woodland and fairy tale symbols. There are 3 different pixies, and a cheery forest backdrop. The sound effects are varied nicely. Music ebbs and flows, along with galloping horse noises and laughter. There is a bright ‘dringgg’ sound when you spin, and the symbols seem to fall into place rather than spin on reels in any traditional sense.
Other than the freefall symbols, the main attraction is a free spins bonus round. You have a simple pick-em and then a different backdrop to the reels. The more lively music for the bonus jolts you out of the relaxed play from the main game while you rack up some wins.
This slot is unique as far as I can tell, with 99 win-lines instead of the usual 100. You need to play 33 coins to access them all. Coin denominations start at just 1c, giving you a minimum of 33c per spin to play. There is an auto spin, which lets you select up to 50 spins at a time.

The ‘Pixies of the Forest’ logo is the best paying symbol. This is worth up to 2000 coins if you get all 5, and 400 coins for 4 of a kind. The pixie with purple hair comes next at 1000 coins for 5, the brunette pixie 400 coins and the blonde a mere 150. The remaining regular symbols are ace, king and queen playing cards. Many of the wins seem a little on the low side. What you will find is that the exploding symbols often create multiple wins per spin to balance against this.
There is a wild symbol (simply says ‘Wild’), which appears on the middle 3 reels. This substitutes for anything except for the bonus symbol. You’ll need to get 3 bonus symbols to trigger the free spins round.
When you hit your 3 bonus symbols, these change into ‘Choose’ symbols instead. You’ll need to click on one of them, which will reveal how many free spins you have won. You then go to a slightly different view (darker) and the spins kick in automatically. There is nothing different in the behaviour of the symbols during this bonus. I felt like there were more cascades of wins than in the main game, though this could have just been variance. Hats off to IGT – these guys know how to take a winning formula and combine it with one of their most popular themes (fairy tale / mystical) to make a great slot. I can see the appeal in this game, even though Pixies would not be my first choice of subject matter.If you do get a nice run of exploding symbols, it is easy for an initially small win to turn into a bigger one with this game. Many of the other ‘freefall’ type slots have versions with double sets if reels. I wonder whether we could see a Pixies of the Forest dual-play at some point that looks like the Da Vinci Diamonds Dual Play slot.
